Hotel does a great job in offering a lot of activities for families that are complimentary (i.e. jumpy house, life sized chess and checkers games, bean bag toss, live entertainment and other group games (i.e. limbo, dance contests etc.). The Pool is great - it was heated which our whole family enjoyed. The poolside offers adult beverages and kids drinks and food which was nice for a relaxing day...

Here on Galveston Island, hidden downtown and neatly tucked away, there sits a little piece of European flavor just begging to be experienced. Ladislav Klos hails from Czechoslovakia. His Courtyard Cafe, which sits on Market Street, was built by hand, starting back in the '90s. There is a courtyard out front so that you may enjoy the nice evenings outdoors. As you walk into the restaurant, it feels more like the kitchen of a European home, rather than a Galveston eatery. Tables and chairs are spread about, but are not uniform in style, adding to the eclectic look and feel of the place. A chalk board hangs on the left hand side, telling customers what to expect for the night's menu. As you walk around, you can hear the chefs (Mr. Klos and his wife) banging away on fresh meats, mixing homemade salad dressing, and shuffling around in the kitchen. Star Drug Store 510 23rd St. Galveston, TX 77550 (409)766-7719 5.41

In 1886, the Scanlons, a prominent real estate family in Galveston, purchased land and built two buildings known as the Levy Building and the Star Drug Store. The Scanlons hired one of Galveston's most renowned architects, Nicholas Clayton, to design the buildings. Clayton created attaching facades wiah asymmetrical window groupings consisting of arches and elaborate decor. The original structure of the Star Drug Store was wood; this changed when Charles J. Michaelis, a local druggist, bought the building in 1906. Michaelis hired a contractor named J.W. Zempter, who without compromising Clayton's design, converted the building to brick. This $15,000 renovation was completed in 1909. In 1917, the Star Drug Store was fully operational, and a horseshoe-shaped, tile soda fountain counter was added to the pharmacy. In the 1920s, George Clampitt and Grady Dickinson purchased and operated the store until 1982. These two men maintained the integrity of the drug store as well as altered history, when the Star became the first desegrated lunch counter in Galveston. Ownership changed hands several times before a severe fire on Friday, March 13, 1998, closed the store indefinitely. In November 2001, the Tilts family purchased and began renovations to the building. This five-year project including rebuilding and restoring the facade, two loft apartments upstairs, the historical Coca-Cola neon porcelain sign, and the drug store. The owners paid careful attention to detail so that their patrons would have a memorable experience. The original horseshoe counter, complete with the embedded red tile star in its prominent facade, still reigns as the Star Drug Store's most recognized emblem. On September 12, 2008, Galveston experienced a devastating disaster, Hurricane Ike. The Star Drug Store sustained over six and half feet of water inside its premises damaging most of the downstairs furniture, equipment and retail items. With the dedication and help of family, friends and co-workers, the Star reopened three months later on December 17, to once again serve its beloved patrons. Hours of Operation Sunday thru Thursday: 8:30am - 3pm Friday & Saturday: 8:30pm - 4pm Note: Hours may be seasonal and subject to change.

Galveston Arts Center 2127 Strand Galveston, TX 77550 (409)763-2403 5.67

Incorporated in 1986, the Galveston Arts Center (GAC) is as an independent nonprofit organization that presents pacesetting contemporary art in a historic building on Galveston's Strand donated by the Junior League of Galveston County. The Galveston Arts Center is the only visual arts organization in Galveston with a permanent location, a rotating exhibition schedule with free admission at all times, and a full-time staff. Curator Clint Willour brings contemporary art from all over the state in approximately 25 exhibitions a year, offering both emerging and established artists a home here. Over 50,000 visitors annually visit GAC exhibitions. In addition, the GAC regularly tours exhibitions to other arts spaces in the state and produces award-winning publications. Willour often draws insightful parallels among the shows he installs in each of the three galleries, presenting unique ways of thinking about art. One of the most rewarding programs of the GAC is Art for All which provides art education outreach to various underserved populations in our community from children on extended hospital stays, to pre-K children at a neighborhood community center to the elderly who live in a local nursing home. These programs offer the joy and new ways of seeing that creative learning can inspire. For over 25 years the GAC has organized and produced ArtWalk, occurring every six to eight weeks on Saturday nights in the heart of Galveston's historic district. Not a street festival, ArtWalk takes place in existing galleries and non-profit spaces and also what are called "other walls," for example, restaurants and retail stores. ArtWalk promotes visual art and artists, extends alternative places to see and learn about art and hopes to bring newcomers, as well as welcome return visitors to the art community on the island. The Center also houses a museum shop, ArtWorks, that presents a showcase for fine craft artists. The store manager constantly looks for new artists and actively pursues supporting working regional artists through display and shop sales. Works are taken on commission and sold to support both the artist and the Arts Center. Initial support for building renovation and programming was provided by: the Junior League of Galveston County, the Moody Foundation; the Kempner Fund; the Houston Endowment and individual donors. Today Hotel/Motel taxes, individual donations, memberships, private foundations and corporate grants provide funding. Devoted volunteers support the GAC with the gift of their time. Agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Museum Services, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Texas Historical Commission, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Texas Committee for the Humanities also have contributed to GAC programs. Hours of Operation Monday thru Saturday: 11am - 5pm Sunday: Noon - 5pm Note: Hours may be seasonal and subject to change.

Artists' Studio & Gallery 1902 Avenue N Galveston, TX 77550 (512)217-1994 4.97

The Artists' Studio & Gallery was founded in 2013 by Elizabeth George. It is hard to find studio space to paint, sculpt and/or draw in Galveston because there are so many artists and a limited amount of space! The concept of sharing the space with other artists quickly gained ground and happily gave the new Resident Artists a serene and safe place to do their art, share their professional thoughts, and develop a cohesive artistic experience. The building was erected in 1896, originally as a neighborhood deli and market in the heart of Old Galveston. After spaces started filling up, it became obvious that the original call for "up to 10 artists" was a fantasy as the studio would not truly hold more than 6 artists comfortably, especially with all the art that started being created! So the Resident Artists collectively decided to retool the studio into The Artists' Studio & Gallery and open the doors to the public. You're invited to stop by and experience a unique opportunity ~ watching the artists work in their individual spaces while viewing and perhaps purchasing paintings from the gallery. Hours of Operation Saturdays: 11am - 4pm and by appointment. Note: Hours may be seasonal and subject to change.

Ed Gearke Island Gallery & Studio 2328 Strand 2nd Floor Galveston, TX 77550 (409)526-2209 5.61

Ed Gearke is a self-taught artist who, since childhood has employed pastel drawing as a means for revealing his observations of the world around him. For most of his life, however, art was relegated to a peripheral status. As Gearke entered his forties, he felt an urgent calling to pursue his art more diligently. In 1986 he began to lease studio space at the Blue Star complex in San Antonio. Regular contact with other artists and intensive studio sessions impelled him on an exhaustive search for meaning through art. Gearke is most profoundly inspired by his surrounding environment and has chosen people and landscapes as his primary subjects. The artist's objective is to forge a connection between himself and the viewer. His drawings are vehicles for expressing the moods these subjects instill in him and initiating a dialogue with the audience. The artist employs pastel primarily for the " hands-on" approach it allows. He appreciates the ability to propel the medium naturally with his hands and fingers. Gearke enjoys the immediacy of its results and the casual ease with which it delineates form, color, light and shadow. Pastel is as unassuming as the artist himself; with it, he is directly able to handle his medium and control every mark. - Margaret Gillham, Curator, Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas Hours of Operation Call for hours.

The Galveston Art League was founded in June, 1914. Today, it enjoys the distinction of being the oldest art league in Texas. Throughout the years, the league has exhibited the work of local artists, sponsored art instruction by well known artists, provided student scholarships and introduced Galvestonians to the cultural world. In 1968 the League was incorporated. The purpose at that time and which continues today is, "to establish an art studio for working groups and a gallery for the exhibition of the art work and sales thereof for the enrichment of children and adults in the area of art and art related subjects and its appreciation in all aspects." Today's members are committed to further develop programs as stated by the foresighted founders of the Galveston Art League. In January 2004, the Galveston Art League was extremely proud to sponsor and present a new and exciting program. The league developed an outreach program called, "The World of Art" for the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Galveston. One hour out of their world into the world of art we love. On May 29, 2004, the league opened its new temporary home at 2117-A Postoffice Street. The league's long-range goal is to their own facility. The league has established a building fund and is seeking individual and corporate funds. The Galveston Art League presents four shows annually and sponsorships are needed for these exhibitions. The summer days have been filled with burst of rain drops and crystal clear blue skies. Since the opening of the Howarth Gallery, everyone is enjoying being transformed to a new place, the delicate rose petals amongst the sparkling crystal shabby chic interiors dance along with the stylish painterly canvases that showcase Katrina Howarth's incredible works of art. The artist is compared often to the great masters Matisse and Cezanne, a museum of works from this creditable artist who is represented in prestigious galleries in Taos, and Santa Fe New Mexico, and in the Chelsea district of New York City with collectors throughout the states, such as Academy Award Director Ron and Cheryl Howard. It's a magical tale of a young lady with big dreams arriving from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland with only a portfolio of paintings and suitcase in hand. Please come and enjoy Katrina's colorful and whimsical oils, often quoted ‘as an afternoon from Alice in Wonderland', it's a delightful jewel in downtown Galveston where cherries will float with cerulean blue skies, golden pears with swirly teacups and falling blueberries scattering amongst cupcakes, found within cottages nestled in the countrysides of European landscapes where lost keys are found and forgotten red shoes appear. Rene' Wiley Studio & Gallery 2128 Post Office St. Galveston, TX 77550 (409)750-9077 5.51

Rene' Wiley Studio & Gallery is located on Galveston Island. The subject for most of her work is the warm Gulf Coast light that illuminiates the harbors, wetlands, alleyways and an assortment of interesting structures. Victorian homes line the streets of her neighborhood, with the Seawall on one end and the historic Strand on the other - so inspiration is always close at hand. Artist Statement Galveston has remained a strong influence in my work. I was first attracted to the people enjoying the sand and saltwater, but after moving here a few years ago, the island landscape has inspired many paintings. In the last year, I have paid close attention to the quiet paths that run behind many of the beautiful houses. These humble landscapes are an authentic part of Galveston. The varied patterns of path, building, foliage, and sky combine to create ever changing designs. The gulfcoast sky provides the essential light that gives color to ordinary subjects. The atmosphere illuminates the familiar and invites the observer to consider the simple beauty of our world. For me, painting is a form of hospitality. Hours of Operation Open Daily: 11am - 6pm Note: Hours may be seasonal and subject to change.

Tyler Studio 1201 Post Office St. Galveston, TX 77550 (409)771-8371 5.91

Tyler Studio has always been a dream for Susan Tyler. She acquired a corner store in the Historical end of Galveston and created place in Galveston that provides an environment to nurture fine art. Fashioned after the Parisian Gertrude Stein Salon of the early 1900s, she established a place where artists, writers and other creative people meet and exchange ideas, critique interpretations of art and display their work. The Grand Opening for Tyler Studio was held on January 17, 2014; they had over 120 friends in attendance to celebrate the milestone. The first featured artist for the opening was Sallie Anderson, a well know water-colorist on the Island. The Studio hosts an exhibition of a featured artist every 6 to 8 weeks. The Studio is also open during ArtWalk and by appointment. Also in conjunction with the featured artist exhibition, the gallery often has a workshop taught by the artist. These workshops are limited in the number of students and provide a lot of one on one instruction. The Salon at the studio is available to small groups to use as a comfortable cozy meeting space. Hours of Operation Wednesday thru Saturday: 2pm-5pm & by Appointment Note: Hours may be seasonal and subject to change.
