Long known for his explosive live performances, Pat Green has also emerged as a great American songwriter. With his latest album, What I’m for, the three time Grammy nominee knew exactly what he wanted in a record. “I wanted to make a perfectly circular record – one that you could just put on repeat and really live with for a while,” he said. The result is a decidedly “lived in” album that reflects not only his growth as a songwriter and musician, but as a person as well.
Green cites an array of early musical influences that run the gamut from ‘80s music to Motown and Classical. However, country music didn’t make an impression until his late teens when he heard Robert Earl Keen. “The stories were great, and the music was so much deeper,” he recalls. Keen’s music turned Green on to Jerry Jeff Walker, which led to a deeper exploration of country music roots, including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. With the important early support of Nelson, Walker and Keen, and a growing list of Texas hits of his own, Green began to make a real name for himself selling out shows at the Houston Astrodome and other legendary Texas venues.
Green’s remarkable talent and larger than life personality carried him beyond the regional borders of Texas with the 2003 release of his gold selling single and album Wave on Wave. His current release, What I’m For, marks his sixth on a major label and finds Green as an established national headliner and sought after touring partner for superstar acts like Kenny Chesney, Dave Mathews, and Keith Urban. His epic performances and unique brand of Rocking Country music have won praise across the country.
Legendary Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd first hit the national scene in the early 1970s. With their unmistakable blues-rock sound, the band quickly rose from opening act to headliner. The band released five albums between 1973 and 1977 and along the way charted a string of timeless hits, including Freebird, Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, and What’s Your Name, among others.
Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded in 1977 following a tragic plane crash that killed several band members, including lead vocalist and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. However, surviving band members would reunite in 1987 for a full scale tour featuring Johnny Van Zant, the youngest brother of the late Ronnie Van Zant, on lead vocals. According to founding member Gary Rossington, live shows are what Lynyrd Skynyrd is all about. “We love to play live, there is nothing else like it. We don’t know anything else to do.”
Despite the high mileage, Skynyrd sounds fresh and renewed while still staying true to their roots. “I think we capture the spirit of the old guys who aren’t with us anymore,” says Rossington. “They’re up on stage with us in heart and soul - I think the people feel that. We’ve tried through the years to keep original all the music, the spirit, the sense of the story.”
That story culminated with the band’s 2006 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But true to the band’s humble southern roots, Rossington states “I never thought we would get this big. I thank God everyday that we’re still around and able to play and people still like us and come to the shows. As long as that’s happening, we’ll keep going on. It’s a gift from God.”
The Pat Green and Lynyrd Skynyrd concerts are part of the inaugural Concerts on the Gulf series, a collaborative effort between Moody Gardens and Island Star Performances to bring nationally acclaimed artists and an exciting array of special events to Galveston Island.
